VOICE22 - Talking About Voice in Healthcare

AI-powered voice tech has integrated so many industries that it's becoming harder and harder to find someone who hasn't used it in one context or another. But the tech's rollout has been slower in one particular sector of human activity: healthcare.

The reason behind voice tech's slower-paced rollout in health care is that it's critical to get things right the first time. Providing high-quality, affordable health care is one of our biggest challenges. And a faux pas in health care can dramatically affect people's lives. So taking the time to do things properly simply makes sense.

Despite the above, voice tech is nonetheless carefully making its way into medical clinics and hospitals, providing benefits to clinicians as well as patients. And while the success stories can be incredibly inspiring, integrating voice tech with health care is a massive challenge.

So at VOICE22, we're going to talk about voice in health care.

VOICE22

VOICE22 will be taking place in Arlington, VA, from October 10th to the 12th. The event will include keynotes, workshops, and panels presented by voice tech leaders worldwide. Our speakers will characterize the leadership, vision, and direction required to successfully integrate the use of voice technology within the healthcare space. You'll learn how the introduction of cutting-edge voice tech leads to better outcomes for clinical staff and their patients.

Of course, the tech needs to fit into existing structures, so learning how to introduce voice tech while supporting the organization's business objectives is also covered. That means creating open communication channels between the executive and clinical teams so that together, they can oversee the organization's IT strategy and implement cost-effective solutions that provide tangible health care benefits.

It's a conversation anyone working in health care should be a part of.

Speaker Highlights

Powering the Digital Patient Experience With a Voice AI DIY Toolset for Healthcare

On October 11th, at 3 PM, J. Joshua Wilda, University of Michigan Health West, Chief Digital and Information Officer, will be joined by Tony Lorentzen, Nuance Communications, SVP, and GM Intelligent Engagement. They will jointly discuss patient-centric conversational AI experiences in a health care setting.

Joshua will explore the technology needed to build a patient-centric platform that acts as their digital front door for curated, personalized, multi-channel health care services. He will also provide insights into how the University of Michigan Health West is currently developing, testing, deploying, and optimizing virtual assistants, natural language, and speech solutions. UMHW's goal is to create a DIY conversational AI toolset that empowers patients, giving them more control over their health.

Tony, for his part, will discuss how Nuance Mix, a customizable version of Nuance's conversational AI platform, supports those creating next-generation voice experiences. It provides developers and organizations with an enterprise-grade, software-as-a-service (SaaS) tooling suite used to develop advanced conversational experiences that power Virtual Assistants (VA) and IVRs across all industries worldwide.

Quantifying and Predicting Pediatric Trauma Using Speech Emotion Recognition

On October 11th, at 5 PM, Founder, and CEO of TQINTELLIGENCE, Yared Alemu, Ph.D., will discuss how speech stands out as a biomarker for psychiatric diseases. And he knows what he's talking about. Indeed, TQI has developed a unique methodology for assessing cognitive development that links trauma, stress, and voice types.

Yared will explain how TQI's voice-based algorithm will be trained to understand patients' behavioral and emotional tendencies to anticipate future behaviors and determine whether a child's linguistic and speech patterns are at the appropriate level relative to their age group. This is critical in measuring a child's emotional distress and developing a personalized treatment plan.

While this kind of medical innovation benefits everyone, it is mainly geared toward low-income and marginalized communities, which tend to have higher rates of mental health issues among children and adolescents. To that end, TQI is developing a one-of-a-kind, proprietary clinical voice sample repository that more accurately represents marginalized communities (African American, Latin, and Caucasian) to create more precise algorithms that more closely reflect our human condition.

Voice of a Generation: Best Practices in Voice Research and Design with Seniors

On October 12th, at 2 PM, Kim Johnson, Best Buy, Lead User Experience Researcher, Yin-Juei Chang, Best Buy, Lead Experience Researcher, and Ben Allen-Kingsland, Sr. Voice User Experience Designer, will discuss the findings of Best Buy Health's (BBYH) research in voice-driven health care for seniors.

BBYH completed three phases of research with senior residents in independent living communities nationwide to identify the desired voice experiences that could best support their day-to-day well-being. The BBYH team gathered insights from seniors and staff via in-depth interviews and concept-tested with groups of seniors using the Wizard-of-Oz method. The Wizard-of-Oz method is a process that allows a user to interact with an interface without knowing that a human rather than a computer is generating the responses by having someone behind-the-scenes who is "pulling the levers and flipping the switches."

Together, the three speakers will share the research's key takeaways about this important demographic, flesh out the best practices for researching with seniors virtually and elaborate on UX design principles for building integrated conversational AI experiences for older adults.

Wrapping Up

Again, the above is just a small sliver of what you can expect to see at VOICE22. Integrating voice with health care is more challenging than in other industries. The more people working in health care join the conversation, the better the odds are of a successful implementation with benefits for all. Join us for VOICE22, October 10th to the 12th, to be part of the discussion about voice in health care.
